Batteries for photovoltaics

Photovoltaic batteries, also called solar batteries or batteries for photovoltaic systems, are electrical devices that are used to store excess electricity generated by photovoltaic panels. Their main role is to store the electricity for later use, thus increasing the efficiency and reliability of solar systems.

- Energy storage: photovoltaic batteries are used to collect excess electricity generated by photovoltaic panels during sunny days. This energy is stored in the batteries instead of being immediately fed into the grid or consumed. There is, however, a virtual battery, which works on the principle of storing energy using software control systems, within the electricity grid or distribution system.

- Stand-alone energy sources: batteries allow solar systems to operate even when sunlight is not available. This means that the electricity stored in the batteries can be used at night or on cloudy days, providing an independent source of energy.

- Increased efficiency: the use of solar batteries increases the overall efficiency of the PV system by minimising the loss of excess energy that would otherwise be lost if not consumed immediately.

Types of batteries used in solar systems:

There are several types of batteries used in solar systems, including lead acid, lithium-ion and others. The choice of a particular battery type depends on system requirements, storage capacity and lifetime requirements.

Lead-acid batteries

This older type of battery was widely used in the early stages of photovoltaic development. Originally, these lead-acid batteries had a limited lifetime, but newer models seek to eliminate this disadvantage. Although they are relatively heavy, large and have a shorter lifetime, they have the advantage of lower cost and better availability.

Lithium-ion batteries

Also known as Li-ion batteries, these are a modern replacement for lead-acid batteries. Their advantages are their more compact size, lighter weight, higher capacity and, above all, longer life. However, these advantages are reflected in their higher price compared to lead-acid batteries. Li-ion batteries are also equipped with many safety features.

Photovoltaic batteries are an important element for solar systems, which are designed to generate electricity from a renewable source of solar energy and then use it in homes, commercial buildings or off-grid applications. These batteries help to optimize the use of solar energy and provide a reliable source of power for a variety of needs.
